2. General Information
Protecting your personal data is important to us. The DSJ Schulcast is a student-led podcast project. We only collect and process personal data to the extent necessary for providing this website and our content.
As an offering of a German school abroad based in South Africa, we align ourselves with both legal frameworks that apply to us: South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
3. Hosting
This website is hosted by Vercel Inc. (340 S Lemon Ave #4133, Walnut, CA 91789, USA). When you visit our pages, the following information is automatically stored in server log files transmitted by your browser:
- IP address of the requesting device
- Date and time of access
- Page / URL accessed
- Browser and operating system used
- Referrer URL (previously visited page)
This data is collected to ensure reliable operation and is automatically deleted after a short period. More information: Vercel Privacy Policy.
4. Contact Form
When you use our contact form, the data you enter (name, email address, subject, message) is sent to us via email. The transmission is handled by FormSubmit.co. Your data is used solely to process your enquiry and is not shared with third parties. More information: FormSubmit Privacy Policy.
5. Third-Party Services
Fonts (self-hosted)
The fonts used on this website are served directly from our own server (self-hosting). No fonts are loaded from Google Fonts or any other third party, so no connection to their servers is established and no IP address is transmitted to third parties.
Podigee (Audio Hosting)
Our podcast episodes are hosted with Podigee GmbH and streamed directly from Podigee servers (CDN). A connection to Podigee is only established once you press Play; data such as your IP address may be transmitted at that point. We do not embed any external player — playback happens inside our own, privacy-light audio element. More information: Podigee Privacy Policy.
Spotify, Apple Podcasts & YouTube (links only)
On our episode pages we link to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and the Schulcast YouTube channel. These are plain hyperlinks — no embeds, players or scripts from these providers are loaded into our pages. Only once you actually click such a link do their respective privacy policies apply: Spotify, Apple and YouTube/Google.
6. Local Browser Storage
This website uses no tracking cookies. However, we use the following browser-native storage mechanisms:
localStorage
The following data is stored in your browser's localStorage:
- Theme setting (
theme): Your choice between light and dark mode, so the preference is remembered on your next visit. - Cookie consent (
cookie-consent): Whether you have acknowledged the privacy notice. - Sinnsuche game data (
sinnsuche-*): If you play the Sinnsuche word game, statistics (games played/won) are stored locally.
This data never leaves your browser and is not transmitted to any server.
sessionStorage
The current playback status of the audio player is stored in your browser's sessionStorage (audio source, playback position, title). This allows playback to continue when navigating between pages. The data is automatically deleted when you close the tab.
7. Third-Party Cookies
This website sets no cookies of its own. Fonts are self-hosted, so no connection to Google is established. Pressing Play may establish a connection to Podigee. We use no tracking cookies, no analytics cookies, no advertising pixels, and no embedded players from external platforms. A short privacy notice is displayed on your first visit.
8. Personal Data of Students and Guests
Schulcast publishes the voices, names and, in some cases, photos of DSJ students and of invited guests — for example in episodes and on our team and guest pages.
Such publication is based solely on prior consent given by the individuals concerned (Art. 6(1)(a), Art. 7 GDPR; and correspondingly under POPIA). For students who are minors, we obtain the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
Consent is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time with effect for the future. On request we will remove the relevant content from this website as far as we are able to; however, for episodes already distributed through podcast directories (e.g. Spotify, Apple Podcasts), complete removal cannot be guaranteed.
